Its simplicity is a good choice in my opinion... however gradient used could be better (especially with respect to angle)... also don't you think that much of negative space is a little distracting? a change in the font of the "THE" might help too...
These are just my opinions based upon my ideal of aesthetics; I am just saying these, because you've stated you'd like some criticism, so...
Yes, that is exactly what I am looking for. The amount of negative space was bugging me too, but after playing around with it a bunch I just couldn't seem to find a decent cropping for it. What font would you recommend for THE though? Helvetica, Verdana?

I think the problem with the "THE" is that it is a little out of style with the rest - this might be pleasing in certain designs but here it seems rather unpleasing to my taste... I'd say, firstly decapitalise it - a "the" in lower case would have a visual flow that is similar to that of the rest. Trebuchet or Tahoma would look good with a lower case "the" I guess

hey buddy! you have nothing to be ashamed of with this piece. once you have a concept, the rest is just execution. there are some good critiques going on in here so I'll go ahead and put my 2 cents in.
the gradient is just a matter of taste (IMO) . . . I use them a lot in my work. one minute it looks great, next minute it doesn't. imagine working with some sort of light source . . . then keep it consistent from the direction its coming from.
what sticks out to me is the " T H E ". its very hard and bright so it almost makes the viewer feel like its a focal point. i think it needs some texture like everything else . . . that why it doesn't stick out.
I absolutely looooooove working with negative space. this is what I would do to take advantage of it in this piece. try reducing the height of the entire page by like 1/3 . . . then drop the composition downward a little. i guarantee it will look better. sometimes having things directly in the center doesn't work, unless there's a conceptual reason behind it.
pheeeeeew . . . hope i didn't bore you. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
